Bulldogs Lead Horizon League with 19 Academic Selections

July 13, 2004

Butler placed 19 student-athletes on the 2004 Spring All-Horizon League Team, finishing first in the conference in student-athletes named to the list. The Bulldogs had representatives on seven of the league's eight spring sports teams and boasted three of the league's six three-time selections. The league released the team July 13.

Senior golfer Colin Christie, senior tennis player Christina Laun and Brad Bennett of the track and field squad followed up 2002 and 2003 honors with 2004 accolades. The teams are voted on by Horizon League sports information directors and faculty athletic representatives. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better, have completed at least three semesters at the same institution and be a starter or significant contributor in a league-sponsored sport. The SIDs and FARs then vote for the number of recipients equal to the number of first team All-Horizon League spots.

In addition to earning academic honors for the third consecutive year, Christie also captured league "Men's Golfer of the Year" honors in 2004. Earlier this year, Laun became the 21st female tennis player to earn "All-Horizon League" first team honors in three consecutive seasons. Joining Christie and Laun, Butler's Andy Bulla (baseball), Melissa Benter (softball) and Wendy Jo Kramer (women's golf) earned academic accolades in addition to spots on their sport's "All-Horizon League" team.
