Butler Athletics Awards Letters To 26 Former Student-Athletes

Oct. 27, 2008

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Butler Athletic Department presented 26 graduates with athletic letters at a ceremony on Saturday (Oct. 25). The group featured female student-athletes who participated in sports in a time before the university awarded letters for female athletics.

All 26 former athletes were awarded framed Varsity B Letterwinner certificates signed by Athletic Director Barry Collier and either Dr. Xandra Hamilton or Barb Greenburg, who aided in the planning of the event.

Following a breakfast in the West Gym, the group was recognized after the first quarter of the Butler Homecoming football game.

The athletes competed for Butler in a range of years from 1943 through 1975 in basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, swimming, field hockey and badminton. Included in the group were six members of the undefeated 1959-60 women's basketball.

Some of the athletes played in as many as five sports, but all of them helped build a legacy of first-class Butler women's sports that is continued today.

At the breakfast, Greenburg, who played in the 1960's and then coached until the 1990's, talked about how things have changed. Seven other honorees also spoke about their experiences while competing in athletics at Butler, while many others shared stories of their own.
