Mike Freeman was promoted to Associate Athletic Director for
External Operations in August of 2009 after a successful stint as
the Manager of External Operations at Butler University.
In his role, Freeman oversees the day-to-day activities of
External Operations, which includes ticketing, sponsorship,
marketing, licensing and television and radio programming. He
also directly supervises the Butler men’s and women’s
golf, cross country and track and field programs. He
previously oversaw the football program. Freeman also plays a
major role in fundraising with the Bulldog Club and its capital
projects.
Freeman has led the External Operations staff to record growth in
a number of areas. Butler set new marks for men's basketball
season tickets and corporate partnership revenue in each of the
last three years. In 2010-11, Butler set a Bulldog Club membership
record with more than 2,700 donors. Butler also set
men’s basketball regular season average attendance marks of
7,178 and 7,202 the past two years - the highest on record since
the 1960’s. Following the 2009-10 season, Butler also
announced an extended partnership with LIN Broadcasting (My-Indy
TV) and a new multi-year partnership with 1070 The Fan, the state's
leading sports radio station.
Freeman is a team instructor for the University of Indianapolis
Sport Management Masters Program and a member of the Board of
Trustees for the Cancer Support Community. Freeman will be
one of two National Association of Athletic Development Directors
(NAADD) Conference Representatives for the Atlantic 10 Conference
in 2012-13. Previous, he was the Horizon League sport liaison
for cross country and track & field and the NAADD Conference
Rep in 2011-12.
While Manager of External Operations, Freeman oversaw the Bulldog
Club, Butler's primary athletic support organization, as well as
development for its capital improvements. Freeman's efforts have
helped Bulldog Club in giving amounts double from 2006 to 2009
after three straight years of increased annual support. Bulldog
Club membership increased from just under 1,000 members in 2005-06
to over 1,700 in 2007-08. He also oversaw special events, including
Golfest, the Basketball Tip-Off Dinner, the department's Priority
Points System and gameday hospitality for football, men's and
women's basketball.
From 2004 to 2006, Freeman had responsibilities in athletic
development, marketing and promotion, ticketing and corporate
sponsorship at the University of Indianapolis. During his time with
the Greyhounds, partnership revenue increased each year. He also
assisted with the Greyhounds' television production of football and
basketball games, the Junior Hound Pound, the Hound Pound
Committee, the Crimson & Grey Member Drive and the Greyhound
Club.
Prior to his appointment at Indianapolis in August of 2004,
Freeman served as a graduate assistant in Athletic Media Relations
at Western Illinois University for two years. He assisted in all
areas of media relations, in addition to marketing and
promotions.
He began his athletic career as a student assistant in the Sports
Information Office at the University of Northern Iowa, where he
attended as an undergraduate. He completed an internship with the
Illinois Junior Golf Association during the summer of 2003, and, in
2001, he was named "Employee of the Year" following a summer
baseball internship with the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods
League.
A native of East Moline, Illinois, Freeman earned his
undergraduate degree in Marketing Management from Northern Iowa in
2002 and his masters' degree in Sport Management from Western
Illinois in 2004.
He and his wife, Melody, have two daughters, Anabelle and Emilia,
and a son, Abram. They reside in Brownsburg.
