Tom made his mark as a great receiver on the Butler football team. In 1972, against Ball State, Tom racked up 211 yards in receiving on 15 catches. While the yardage record stood until 1990, the 15 catches is still a Butler record. At the end of the 1972 season, Tom had amassed 1,031 total receiving yards on 73 catches, becoming the first player in Butler football history with over 1,000 receiving yards in a season. He finished his career in first place on Butler's all-time list for receiving yards with 1,933 on 117 receptions. Tom was named 1971 Indiana Collegiate Conference Lineman of the Year.
