While working for university development, Smith was part of a group that raised $3.4 million in unrestricted gifts during the 2007 and 2008 fiscal years. Smith was also active in event planning with donors and also advised the Young Alumni Board and the Parent Council.

Prior to joining university development, Smith worked in the communications department at the Horizon League office in downtown Indianapolis. While there, he served as the primary media contact for men's soccer, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's golf and women's softball.

A native of Nashville, Ind., Smith earned his degree in Telecommunications Arts with a minor in Journalism in 2003. Smith and his wife, Amanda, reside in Carmel with their daughter Ella Marie.
