Eleven Bulldogs Earn Academic All-Horizon League Honors

Eleven Butler student-athletes from the fall sports were named Academic All-Horizon League for exceptional performance on the field and in the classroom. Butler had the most academic all-league performers, accounting for 22 percent of the league’s 50 honored student-athletes. Bulldogs Fall At UAB, 67-57

UAB scoring leader Elija Millsap, held in check for most of the game, sparked a 10-2 scoring run in the final two minutes to lead the host Blazers to a 67-57 victory over Butler in a non-league test at Bartow Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 22. Bulldogs Edged In 2OT At Dayton, 84-81

Junior Alyssa Pittman scored 23 points and hit seven 3-pointers but the Butler women’s basketball team was edged, 84-81, in double overtime at Dayton Monday night. The Bulldogs sank a flurry of 3-pointers to erase a 12-point deficit in the second half. Read Full Release [+]
Bulldogs Tie Third-Highest Win Total In School History

Butler Visits Red-Hot UAB For Final Pre-Christmas Tilt
Butler’s challenging pre-Christmas schedule continues with yet another tough test when the Bulldogs travel to Birmingham, Ala., on Tuesday, Dec. 22, to face UAB. The non-league game at Bartow Arena is slated for 7 p.m. (CT, 8 p.m. in Indianapolis).

Butler Edges Xavier, 69-68
Sophomore Gordon Hayward hit a lay-up with 0:01.2 left on the clock to lift Butler to a 69-68 come-from-behind victory over visiting Xavier in a hard-fought, non-league game at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday (Dec. 19). The dramatic, game-winning play also set off a series of events that kept the outcome in doubt for an additional 10-15 minutes.

Bulldogs Take Win Streak To Dayton Monday
The Butler women’s basketball team will take its four-game winning streak to Dayton Monday, Dec. 21 for a 5 p.m. contest at UD Arena. The Bulldogs are now 6-3 after a 65-48 win at Cincinnati last Sunday. The game at Dayton, which was ranked in the Top 25 before a loss last week, will be BU’s final non-conference road game this season.

Butler Ends Layoff At Home Against Xavier
Butler ends a week of final exams with maybe its most challenging test when it hosts Atlantic 10 Conference power Xavier on Saturday, Dec. 19. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) at Hinkle Fieldhouse and will be nationally-televised on ESPN2.

The Butler University Athletic Department will offer a free parking shuttle for fans attending the Butler-Xavier men’s basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 19. The game at Hinkle Fieldhouse is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Jessica Wolfe Named AVCA All-America
Junior outside hitter Jessica Wolfe was named honorable mention All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). She becomes the second player in Butler history to capture AVCA All-America honors, joining Areal Bienemy (2003-04).

Rob Mullett Named Horizon League Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
Butler senior Rob Mullett, who turned in a strong individual performance in the Bulldogs’ season-opening indoor track and field meet, has been named Horizon League Male Track Athlete of the Week for the period of December 7-13.

When the final seconds ticked down on Butler’s Gridiron Classic victory over Central Connecticut State, the Bulldogs had not only their first-ever postseason victory but also a coveted place in the school and Pioneer Football League all-time record books!

Butler Opens Season With 1-0 Loss At Western Kentucky
Western Kentucky’s Megan Meinke scored in the 45th minute to give the Butler women’s soccer team a 1-0 loss in its season opener Friday afternoon. Meinke’s game-winning goal, a strike from the left side just outside the box, came at 44:35.

Fourteen members of the Horizon League’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee visited Riley Children’s Hospital on Friday, July 31. The community outreach opportunity included guest speakers, a video session and tour of the hospital.

Butler's Hayward creates buzz at 19-and-under national team trials
Butler's Gordon Hayward, who was selected for USA Basketball's 19-and-under national team Thursday, was first featured in the sporting press four years ago. A story in a regional section of the Indianapolis Star profiled Gordon and his twin sister, Heather, who were playing mixed doubles in the Indiana State Open. They were precocious prep tennis stars. She had already played No. 1 singles as a freshman at Brownsburg High; he played No. 1 doubles then, and No. 1 singles the next year. The paper said the twins planned on going to Purdue, their parents' alma mater.

Former Butler men's soccer players are invited back to campus to enjoy a weekend of Homecoming activities, including an Alumni Game on Saturday, Oct. 25. The match between two teams of Butler alums will be held at Varsity Field, beginning at 10 a.m.

Softball, Soccer Players Spark Kids' Interest in Books
It might have looked like a huddle, but reading a story and having fun was the game plan, when outfielder Jenny Jacobs of Indianapolis gathered her "team" of youngsters around her during the Jan. 12 Readers' Day in Hinkle Fieldhouse. A senior member of Butler's softball team, Jacobs read the children's book Click, Clack Moo during a family literacy fair, staged before the Butler men's basketball game against Milwaukee.
