Service is an important part of the Butler athletics experience. In between practices, classes and games, some Bulldog student-athletes and staff made a difference this holiday season at the St. Mary's Child Center in Indianapolis.
This was the third year in which Butler student-athletes and athletics staff donated to the St. Mary's Child Center. More than $1,000 was donated and used to 220 shoeboxes filled with toys for the children. Student-athletes wrapped the presents and delivered them to the children this week.
"There is nothing I love better than to see the smiles on the kids’ faces when they open those boxes," said Sonya Hopkins, who is Butler's coordinator of academic support and is the liaison to Shoebox Christmas. "What’s even better is to watch our athletes light up when they experience the appreciation that they express to them through their hugs and thank you's. The scene is simply priceless.”
Madison Roeder (cross country/track), Kelly Kyle (volleyball), Laura Luther (women's soccer) and Megan Schaefer (women's golf) were among the student-athletes who delivered the presents.
St. Mary's Child Center, a non-profit which serves young children who live in poverty, has three Indianapolis locations.
