Swimming Adds Nine To 2009-10 Roster

Butler women's swimming head coach Maurice Stewart continued his building up of the program with the announcement of the 2009-10 recruiting class.  The Bulldogs will feature a total of nine newcomers this fall, nearly doubling the size of the roster from the previous season.

"I am pleased with the nine incoming freshman we have tagged for the 2009-10 season," Stewart said.  "The program is definitely taking steps forward as we increase our numbers and improve the team's competitiveness with this group of freshman and our returning swimmers.  This should be a solid season for Butler Swimming."

Each one of the swimmers on the highly-decorated recruiting class were either named to their all-conference team, were named team captains or held school records upon their graduation.

A detailed synopsis of the nine newcomers is below.

Alyson Fosnot
IM, Fly, Breast
Villa Park, Ill.
Willowbrook HS

Finished as a conference and sectional medalist...tabbed to the West Suburban Conference All-Academic Team...named her high school team captain as both a junior and senior.

Coach Stewart on Fosnot: "Alyson is a very balanced and hardworking individual that will add to our team dynamic.  She will contribute to the team in the 50, 100 and 200 fly and will add depth in the IM events."

Findlay, Ohio
Findlay HS

Four-year district qualifier at Findlay High School...team co-captain as a senior...four-year varsity letterwinner...helped team to the sectional championship all four seasons...also led squad to district titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008, as well as a conference championship in 2008...graduated with honors, holding at least a 3.5 grade point average throughout her high school tenure.

Coach Stewart on Geise: "Lisa is a hard working and talented individual who has a firm grasp on managing her time as a high school athlete.  Her experience handling the rigors of a competitive high school program will certainly help as she begins her college swimming track this fall."

Was named Academic All-American as a senior at St. Francis Preparatory High School...named team captain...also swam at the club level for 13 years.

Coach Stewart on Hannon: "Bridget is a physically strong and determined young lady that will certainly improve at Butler.  She will add depth in the 50 through 500 free and fly events this season.  I am excited to have the opportunity to work with Bridget this season to develop her talent, strength, and swimming potential."

Team captain as a senior in 2008-09...named the team's Most Valuable Swimmer in 2007-08...Vice President of the school's National Honor Society...received an Academic Honors Diploma...earned the Foreign Language Departmental Award, the Terrific Top Ten Award and the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence...served as a Hoosier Girls State Delegate...was an American Legion Americanism Government Test district and state scholarship winner.

Coach Stewart on Humphrey: "Jazzmin is coming onto the swim team with the ambition to improve her sprint, middle distance free and breaststroke events.  I am confident she will be a dedicated student-athlete and will add depth to the team in both the free and breast events."

Four-year varsity letterwinner as a member of the swimming team...named to the all-conference team and all-sectional squad four years...earned Most Improved Swimmer distinction as a sophomore...helped team to four-straight undefeated dual meet seasons...also lettered three years as a member of the track team...a member of the National Honors Society and Student Ambassadors...named to the honor roll for four years.

Coach Stewart on Johannsen: "Kyle is a dynamic individual that will have a significant influence on the program's middle distance and distance success this year.  I am confident that her summer training will allow her to not only be a great training partner for senior Stephanie Moles, but will also put her in a position to be a potential conference contributor in multiple events."

Swam for a variety of different club teams over a 10-year span...presented with the Mental Attitude Award as a junior...named team captain her senior season...member of a high school program that has won 17-consecutive conference titles.

Coach Stewart on Lawson: "Caitlyn will be a dedicated and hard working addition to the team's distance program this season.  I am confident she will thrive under the distance training program we have in place, but I also think she has the talent and skill level to further develop her breaststroke and IM events."

Was a three-year letterwinner for York High School as a member of both the swim team and water polo team...team captain as a senior...earned the team's Sportsmanship Award in 2007...invited to sectionals as a junior and senior, recording best-times of  1:07.14 in the 100 backstroke, 2:28.78 in the 200 IM and 5:55.57 in the 500 freestyle...also swam for the Elmhurst Swim Team for 12 winter seasons and three summer seasons...named the squad's Most Outstanding Swimmer in 2008 and Most Improved Swimmer in 2006...member of Key Club and the National Honor Society in 2008 and 2009...also a member of the York Mathematics Honor Society for maintaining over a 3.6 grade point average in math from 2007-09...earned the West Suburban Conference Academic Achievement Award in both 2008 and 2009.

Coach Stewart on Onstwedder: "Jessica is a motivated young lady that will come into our program ready to challenge herself on a daily basis and be a team player.  She will be one of our top backstroke swimmers this season and will add depth in the IM, breast and sprint free events."

Corydon Central HS

Finished as a sectional finalist in the 50 freestyle two years...named to the all-conference team three times...picked up titles in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 50 freestyle...team captain...helped the squad to a pair of Mid-Southern Conference Championships...graduated with a weighted grade point average of 4.589...received an Academic Honors Diploma... was the secretary of her senior class, treasurer of the National Honor Society and an NCAA Student Athlete Ambassador...served as editor-in-chief of both the school newspaper and yearbook, receiving numerous awards including the state-wide Harvey Award for Best Column Writing.

Coach Stewart on Smith: "I am confident Sami will thrive in both the classroom and pool this year.  I expect her to contribute in the sprint and middle distance free events, and I am looking forward to developing her versatility as well."

Pendleton, Ind.
Pendleton Heights HS

Swam to the school record in the 200 IM...also was a member of the record-setting relay teams in the 200 medley and the 200 and 400 freestyles...named the PHHS Lady Arabian 2009 MVP...also tabbed as the Spirit Award winner...graduated with a Summa Cum Laude diploma with academic honors...was among the top-15 percent in her graduating class...member of the National Honor Society, the German National Honor Society and BETA Club.

Coach Stewart on Weston: "Nikki will make an immediate impact in the IM and sprint free and will add depth in the breaststroke events this season.  I really like her versatility and swimming talent which will allow her to potentially be a multiple event contributor at the Horizon League Championships."
