FISHERS, Ind. - The Butler women's swimming & diving team opened the 2009-10 campaign Sunday, hosting Wright State, Evansville and St. Louis at Fishers High School. Stephanie Moles, Megan Wesler and Nikki Weston were among the Bulldogs' leaders in the meet.
"I thought our women competed with confidence and handled their first meet jitters well against three very solid teams today," head coach Maurice Stewart said. "The meet also gave our girls a good outlook on what to expect at the conference championships in February by competing against Wright State, who finished third last year at the league championships".
Moles was BU's top distance swimmer, placing 7th in the 1000 freestyle (11:26.38) and 10th in the 500 free (5:37.23). Moles also anchored the Bulldogs' 400 free relay team, which finished 6th.
Wesler was the team's top performer in the 200 free (2:04.62) and also swam the lead leg of the 400 free relay team. She also competed in the 400 medley relay.
Another notable sprint swimmer was Leigh Weston, who led the team in the 100 free (1:01.76) and 200 breaststroke (2:40.23). Nikki Weston had a team-best 2:20.06 in the 200 IM. Nikki Weston also anchored the 400 medley relay squad.
A few other Bulldogs posted noteworthy performances as well. Jessica Onstwedder recorded a personal best time of 29.07 in the 50 free and was two second short of her best in the 100 back. Jazzmin Humphrey's 27.61 was a personal best in the 50 free, and Caitlyn Lawson had her best time in the 200 fly (2:41.15).
Stewart also noted the performances of Kyle Johannsen (1000 free, 11:28.80) and Momo Wilson (200 breast, 2:40.77).
The Bulldogs return to competition Friday, Oct. 23 in a triangular meet at IUPUI. The meet will begin at 5:30 p.m.
