INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler swimming team continued to improve and pick up victories in a three-team meet Friday night at IUPUI Natatorium. The Bulldogs defeated Centre College to finish second in the event.
"I am proud of the team's energy, spirit and solid racing this evening," head coach Maurice Stewart said. "Everyone is contributing to the team's early-season success and improvements. Getting our third win of the season is pretty exciting."
Butler posted 12 season-best times and added a season-best start to the 200 free relay by Hannah Somerville at the end of the meet. BU was led by Lauren Lambrecht and Caitlin Weichelt. Lambrecht won the 100 fly (1:00.07) and 200 IM (2:15.80) with season-best times in each event. Weichelt's 10:57.91 in the 1000 free is now the fourth-best time on Butler's top 10 list.
The meet started with a season-best effort in the 200 medley relay (1:52.67) and solid performances in the distance events. Head coach Maurice Stewart said the team's performance in the first half of the meet carried the Dawgs during the night.
"Starting out the meet with a season best in the 200 medley relay and solid performances by Weichelt and Kyle Johannsen really sparked excitement and created momentum in the first half of the meet."
Kaitie Ring's 1:03.32 mark in the 100 back was a season best and moments later a 2-3 finish by Somerville and Weichelt in the 100 breast helped Butler past Centre. Eshan Pua and Lauren Need helped extend the lead with good finishes in the 200 fly.
Elizabeth Grogran had season bests in the 50 free (26.16) and 100 free (57.03). Lauren Scotti's time of 25.31 in the 50 free was good for third place and Johannsen went 5:40.61 for a season best in the 500 free.
Butler's next meet is Nov. 11-12 at IUPUI's House of Champions meet.
