BROWN DEER, Wis. - Both of Butler 200 yard relay teams set season bests and three distance swimmers set new marks during the first day of the 2012 Horizon League Swimming & Diving Championships. 

Kaitie Ring, Lauren Lambrecht and Lauren Scotti competed in both successful relay teams. Scotti swam the anchor leg in both events. Butler finished seventh in both relay events, beating Valparaiso each time. 

The 200 free relay team (Hannah Somerville, Lambrecht, Ring, Scotti) clocked 1:40.48. Scotti's 24.91 split led the team.

The night finished with BU's 200 medley entry clocking a season-best 1:51.89. Ring, Rosalie Fidanze, Lambrecht and Scotti swam to beat the season's best time by 0.78 seconds.

Four BU swimmers competed in the 1000 free, and three of the four posted their best marks of the season. Kathleen Brannen shaved a second off her previous best to place 23rd with an 11:16.46 time. Laureen Need made a big improvement in the distance event, clocking 11:18.17. Her previous best was 11:50.24. Kyle Johannsen touched the wall in 11:23.15 to finish 26th.

Three days remain in the season's final event. The championships, hosted by Milwaukee, will run through Saturday night.
