Butler Swimming Defeats Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. – The Butler women's swimming team defeated Western Illinois Saturday afternoon by posting 148 points against the Leathernecks. Monmouth was unable to travel to the event, making the contest a dual meet.

"I was impressed with our racing and team spirit today," Head Coach Maurice Steward said. "It is great to see this team really come together at the end of the regular season."

The 200 Medley Relay team of Kaitie Ring, Amanda Wagner, Audrey Gosnell and Claire Butkus picked up a first place win after a solid 50 back lead from Kaitie Ring (29.3). The Bulldogs also picked up a first place finish in the 200 Free as Claire Butkus won the race in a time of 2:00.5.

Butler dominated the 200 IM and the 100 Fly talking first, second, third place. Emma Green paced the group in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.8 and Genevieve Pena was the top finisher in the 100 Fly.

Multiple BIG EAST qualifying times were achieved by Butler at Western Illinois. Audrey Gosnell won the 100 Free and Caitlin Weichelt achieved an A Qualifying time at 56.55.

The 100 Back was another 1-2-3 finish for BU with Green leading the team at 1:03.9. Solid performances were also recorded by Emily McCutchan and Hailey Jensen who each achieved a B Qualifying time (1:05.33).

Pena posted a season-best time in the 1000 Free, touching the wall at 11:04 to end in second place. Butler chalked up another first place finish in the 50 Free with a come from behind win from Wagner.

The 500 Free showcased a strong second half finish from Gibbons and Pena as the duo finished first and second. Rose was also in action as she earned a BIG EAST B qualifying time of 5:35.03.

"This can only strengthen our confidence going into the Big East Championships in a few weeks."
