Maurice Stewart

Head Coach

Maurice Stewart returns for his fourth season as the head coach of the women's swimming team at Butler.

The future of the Butler women's swimming team has become increasingly bright in the time that Stewart has been at the helm. The program has returned to its winning ways in the past two seasons. A pair of dual meet wins in 2006-07 gave the Bulldogs their first victories in almost three seasons before the 2007-08 squad continued the trend with a win over Rose-Hulman in January.

The 2007-08 team turned in a flury of fast times, as the Bulldogs tallied 10 performances that rank among the top-10 marks in school history. The squad also thrived in the classroom, as three members (Sarah Lynne Gates, Katie Krueger and Elizabeth Shafer) were named to the Winter Academic All-Horizon League Team and the sqaud as a whole earned distinction from College Swimming Coaches Association of America as one of the top-25 programs nationally in grade point average.

The women's team continued to show improvement during the 2006-07 campaign, scoring dual meet wins over Transylvania and Vincennes before setting 14 top-10 times in the Horizon League Championship. The squad finished the year with 22 all-time top-10 marks.

The 2006-07 men's squad, meanwhile, posted four school records during the year while posting 31 all-time top-10 marks.

In his first season at the helm in 2005-06, Stewart guided the Bulldogs to one of their strongest Horizon League Championship showings in history, with the men's team scoring 201 points in the tournament and the women's squad finishing with 149. Butler also went on to set 14 all-time top-10 school marks, including three school records by Raj Duggal (200, 500 and 1,000 freestyle).

Stewart also continued to emphasize the student in student-athlete. The Butler men's and women's teams have been recognized in the top 30 nationally by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for touting cumulative grade point averages above 3.000 in every semester since Stewart was named head coach.

Stewart came to Butler after serving as an assistant coach at Auburn for two seasons under head coach David Marsh. During that time, the Tigers won men's NCAA Championships in both 2004 and 2005, while the women's team won the national championship in 2004.

In addition to dry land and on-deck coaching specifically in butterfly and sprint freestyle with varsity student-athletes, Stewart assisted in seasonal planning and training of post-graduate athletes for the 2004 Olympic Trials.

In his role with the varsity team, and Auburn Aquatics as a whole, Stewart served as an academic group coach for student-athletes, assisted with administrative duties, including on-campus recruiting, team equipment and coordinating a successful Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser for Auburn Swimming. He also served as an Auburn Aquatic assistant coach and as camp coordinator, coach and counselor for the Auburn Tiger Swim Camps.

Prior to arriving at Auburn, Stewart was the head coach at Sugar Creek Swim Club in St. Louis, Mo., for four years. There, he coached an athlete to the 2000 Junior National Championships in the 100-yd. and 200-yd. breaststroke events.

He also coached several Top-16 athletes and Ozark LSC champions. He was an Ozark LSC senior committee member from 1999-2003 and served as the Ozark LSC Head Zone Coach for the 15-18 age group in 2001.

Stewart owned the University of Kentucky record in the 100-yd. butterfly from 1993-2000. As a Wildcat, he was named a 1993 co-captain and was a NCAA consideration time and Senior National Qualifier in the 100-yd. butterfly. Prior to arriving at Kentucky, Stewart was a member of the Indian River Community College national championship team in 1991. There he was a National Junior College Athletic Association six-time All-American and national champion in the 100-yd. butterfly.

Stewart graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1996.
