Butler got a look at some Horizon League competition Friday (Jan. 13), traveling to UW-Green Bay for a dual meet against the Phoenix. The Phoenix prevailed 150-69 in the men's competition and 167-85 in the women's, but Butler coach Maurice Stewart saw several encouraging things in the contest.
"Our swimmers held their heads high, were spirited, and encouraged to each other despite performance frustration and the defeat against a strong Green Bay team this weekend," said Stewart, in his first season at Butler. "The team is competing tired as our holiday training finished on Monday. I am confident all our hard work will pay off at conference in five weeks as we begin to fine tune and rest in a few weeks."
On the women's side, Elaine Mohler's time of 5:38.78 in the 400-yd. individual medley was a season-best, while her 1000-yd. freestyle time of 13:08.05 just missed her best of the 2005-06 campaign. Stewart also highlighted the efforts of Krista Peterson (2:20.34 in the 200-yd. freestyle), Katie Krueger (personal-best 1:13.08 in the 100-yd. backstroke) and Jennifer Weiss (119 points in the one-meter diving).
Melissa Nemec (100-yd. butterfly - 1:09.99) and Janna Fett (400-yd. IM - 5:19.07) also posted season-best times.
In men's competition, the men's 800-yd. freestyle relay posted a season-best time of 7:38.31. That was the squad's best mark of the year by more than 13 seconds. Stewart also highlighted the individual efforts of Jason Brozek, Jeff Martin and Korey McCulley.
The Bulldogs return to action the weekend of Jan. 27-28, traveling to Xavier Friday for a 4 p.m. match-up with the Musketeers before heading to Ball State Saturday for a 1 p.m. swim.
Butler concludes the regular season with a home contest against Horizon League rival Wright State Sunday, Feb. 5. The 1 p.m. start is set for Carmel High School, just north of Indianapolis.
