Feb. 5, 2007
Carmel, Ind. - Mary Beth Arnold tallied a pair of event wins and the Bulldogs combined for seven victories overall, as the Butler men's and women's swimming teams each notched wins over visiting Vincennes on Sunday (Feb. 4) at the Carmel High School pool. The men's squad topped the Trailblazers, 126-39, while the women's team scored a 133-35 win. Xavier proved to be too much for both teams in the tri-meet, however, as the Musketeers tallied a 105-79 decision over the men and a 117-71 triumph over the women.
The win is both teams' second on the year, after the men's and women's teams both defeated Transylvania on Oct. 21.
All four Butler seniors notched a win in the meet, including Arnold, Jason Brozek, Raj Duggal and Korey McCulley. Both Butler squads combined for 15 season-best times, with the men's notching 10 and the women touting five.
Arnold was the top senior for the Bulldogs in the meet, swimming to a 25.76 in the 50 freestyle before adding a 1:08.41 in the 100 breaststroke. She also swam the anchor leg of the 200 freestyle relay and, along with Sarah Lynne Gates, Elizabeth Shafer and Stephanie Moles, tallied a season-best mark in the event. Gates also finished with a victory in the 100 backstroke, swimming the trip in 1:04.06.
Julie Elmore (11:39.45) and Moles (11:40.90) added personal-bests in the 1,000 free to finish 2-3 in the event. Momo Wilson added a 2:31.53 in the 200 IM for her own season-best mark.
The men's seniors did not leave empty handed either. Brozek notched a 1:00.30 in the 100 breaststroke for the win and added a season top-time of 54.11 in the 100 butterfly, while Duggal scored a 4:52.48 for victory in the 500 freestyle and a second-place time of 2:02.56 in the 200 IM. McCulley rounded out the senior success with a winning time of 21.94 in the 50 freestyle.
Chris Gordon swam to a second-place showing in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.71 and added a 200 free time of 1:48.65 for third.
The Bulldogs will spend the next two weeks in preparation for the Horizon League Championships, which begin on Feb. 21.
