Bulldogs Close Regular Season Against Wright State

Feb. 8, 2006
Butler completed its regular season Sunday, hosting Horizon League opponent Wright State at Carmel High School, just north of Indianapolis. The meet was the final home contest for the team's lone senior, Amanda Walter, who was honored in a pre-meet ceremony.
"I was pleased with our performances this weekend," said Butler coach Maurice Stewart. "The team's skills and competitiveness are noticeably improving as we finished the regular season. I feel this team with only one senior is coming together. We had over 14 season-best times and the meet was a confidence boost for many as we prepare for conference."
Highlighting the women's effort for Butler was junior Mary Beth Arnold, who posted a season-best time of 2:04.42 in the 200-yd. freestyle and placed second in the 200-yd. breaststroke in 2:26.71. Elizabeth Shafer (200-yd. and 500-yd. freestyle), Sarah Lynne Gates (200-yd. backstroke), Genny Berning (100-yd. and 200-yd. butterfly) and Melissa Nemec (50-yd. freestyle) also set season-best marks. Walter, the team's lone senior, matched her season-best in the 50-yd. freestyle (30.95) and shattered her previous best by more than four seconds in 200-yd. breaststroke.
On the men's side, Jason Brozek had solid performances in both the 200-yd. butterfly (2:04.61) and 100-yd. freestyle (50.72), while Jimmy Howard had season-best times in both the 100-yd. butterfly (57.80) and 50-yd. freestyle (22.71). Jeff Martin had a season-best time in the 200-yd. freestyle (2:00.14) and a solid performance in the 200-yd. backstroke (2:15.12).
Junior Raj Duggal posted a time of 2:22.71 in the 200-yd. breaststroke and just missed a season-best in the 200-yd. freestyle with a time of 1:49.0. Chris Scroggin swam season-bests in both the 100-yd. and 200-yd. breaststrokes, while Travis Cheney posted solid swims in both the 200-yd. backstroke (2:16.74) and 200-yd. individual medley (2:16.98).
The Bulldogs now prepare for the Horizon League Championships, which Cleveland State will host Feb. 22-25.
