Arnold Scores School Record On Third Day Of League Championships

Chicago - Senior Mary Beth Arnold highlighted the third day of competition for the Bulldogs at the Horizon League Championships on Friday (Feb. 23), breaking her own school-record in the 100 breaststroke. Additionally, Butler set two school top-10 times and added seven more season-best marks.
Arnold put an exclamation point on her career as the Butler's top breaststroker in the history of the women's program, swimming the 100 yard trek in 1:05.52 to finish in third place while topping her previous all-time best mark 0.4 seconds.
Raj Duggal fell just shy of notching his second school record of the tournament, finishing sixth in the 200 freestyle with a 1:42.25, finishing barely a quarter-second short of his top time. Jason Brozek, meanwhile, improved on his top-10 time in the 100 breaststroke, swimming the trip in 59.05 for seventh place.
Five individual swimmers added season-best marks on the day, including Stephanie Altepeter in the 400 IM (4:55.21), Sarah Lynne Gates (1:02.31) and Korey McCulley (53.84) in the 100 backstroke, Ali Overgaard in the 100 fly (1:01.67) and Elizabeth Shafer in the 200 free (2:01.09).
Additionally, the women's 800 free relay team of Arnold, Shafer, Stephanie Moles and Gates scored a season-best 8:12.22 while topping Cleveland State in the final standings, the third time in the tournament that a Butler relay team has finished ahead of a competitor. The men's 800 squad of Duggal, Chris Gordon, Brozek and Jimmy Howard also finished with a season-best, swimming to a 6:59.49.
The Horizon League Championships conclude on Saturday (Feb. 24) with swimming prelims at 10:30 a.m. (CST), diving at 2:00 p.m. and swimming finals at 6:00 p.m.
