Fishers, Ind. - Butler opened up the 2008-09 campaign at home on Sunday (Oct. 5), as the Bulldogs took on teams from Evansville, Saint Louis and Valparaiso at the Fishers High School pool.
Sophomore Leigh Weston garnered the squad's top showing of the meet, placing third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:34.08.
Senior Sarah Lynne Gates swam to a time of 11:37.44 in the 1,000 free for a fifth-place finish and picked up another fifth-place showing in the 200 back with a swim of 2:16.25, falling just over a tenth of a second shy of a school top-10 mark.
Sophomore Libby Bates finished sixth in the 200 free with a time of 2:07.34 and paced the squad in the 500 free with a seventh-place time of 5:43.57. Senior Katie Krueger, meanwhile, notched a sixth-place showing in the 50 free with a time of 26.82 and added a seventh-place finish in the 100 in a time of 59.21
Junior Kendall Wormley chipped in a seventh-place showing in the 200 fly, making the trip in 2:39.53, while junior Stephanie Moles added a time of 11:57.85 in the 1,000. Momo Wilson, meanwhile, placed seventh in the 200 IM with a swim of 2:27.49.
Kruger, Weston, Wormley and Allison Shafer swam to a 4:36.07 in the 400 medley relay, while Gates, Moles, Wilson and Bates tallied a 3:56.51 in the 400 freestyle relay.
"I was pleased with the overall performance despite having some rough edges going into our first meet of the season," head coach Maurice Stewart said. "The main goal heading into the meet was focusing on the back half of our races. Most of the ladies did well here, but we still face some challenging work ahead in other areas in order for us to build confidence and get better as a team."
Butler returns to the pool on Oct. 17 when it takes on host IUPUI and Centre College beginning at 5:30 p.m.
