Duggal Wins 1000-yd. Freestyle as Butler Opens 2005-06 Season

The Bulldogs opened the 2005-06 season Sunday afternoon, hosting Evansville, Saint Louis and Valparaiso in a series of dual meets in Carmel, Ind. Junior Raj Duggal posted the best Butler result, winning the 1000-yd. freestyle with a time of 10:15.76. Saint Louis won both the men's and women's overall competitions.
"We had some very good individual performances Sunday," said Butler coach Maurice Stewart. "The team came out and exceeded my expectations in terms of competing. That being said, it's still early in the season and we have a lot of work to do."
On the men's side, Korey McCulley placed second in the men's 50-yd. freestyle with a time of 22.11. Jason Brozek earned a second-place finish in the 200-yd. breaststroke with a time of 2:16.25.
In women's competition, Mary Beth Arnold placed second in the 200-yd. breaststroke (2:28.50) and fourth in the 200-yd. individual medley (2:19.89).
Several freshmen also had impressive debuts for the Bulldogs. Sarah Lynne Gates finished fifth in the 200-yd. backstroke, posting a time of 2:20.28. She also swam the team's fastest split in the 400-yd. freestyle relay at 56.55. Classmate Elaine Mohler set a new personal-best in the 200-yd. individual medley, topping her previous mark by more than two seconds. Rick Keca raced well in the 200-yd. backstroke, finishing fifth at 2:05.05.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, Oct. 29 at Western Kentucky.
