Indianapolis, Ind. - The Butler women's swimming team heads to Cleveland, Ohio, for the 2008 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships, which run Feb. 20-23 at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on the campus of Cleveland State. The finals sessions for the last three days of the tournament (Feb. 21-23) will be aired live online on the Horizon League Network.
The Bulldogs closed out the 2006-07 campaign with a bang at last year's league championship, swimming to five school records and a list of season-best and personal-best times. Both teams continued to improve under head coach Maurice Stewart, as the women's team improved their Horizon League Championship point total by 11 (146 in 2006 to 157 in 2007) while the men increased their total by 18 (201 to 219).
This year's installment will try to build on their recent development, with a 2007-08 squad that has already set five Butler top-10 times, including two each by senior Elizabeth Shafer and freshman Leigh Weston and one by junior Sarah Lynne Gates.
Shafer notched one of the fastest times in Butler history as the Bulldogs concluded the regular season against IUPUI on Feb. 6 at the IUPUI Natatorium. She swam to an 11:05.20 - the third-fastest time ever - and finished a mere 16 hundredths of a second shy of a victory. Numerous other swimmers, including Gates, Weston, Katie Kruger and Momo Wilson, tallied personal best marks in the meet.
