Feb. 22, 2006
The 2005-06 season culminates this week when Cleveland State hosts the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships at Busbey Natatorium. The tournament kicks off on Wednesday (Feb. 22) at 3:00 p.m., with diving preliminaries followed by swimming and diving finals at 6:00 p.m. The remaining three days (Feb. 23, 24 and 25) will feature a preliminary swimming round at 10:30 a.m., followed by the diving prelims at 3:00 p.m. and finals round at 6:00 p.m. The Bulldogs enter their first championships under head coach Maurice Stewart.
Butler has enjoyed success in recent Horizon League Championships. Last season, Raj Duggal placed third in the 1000-yd. freestyle, fifth in the 1650-yd. freestyle and sixth in the 500-yd. freestyle to lead the Butler effort. In the 500-yd. event, Duggal got to the wall in 4:37.66, setting a new Butler record. He narrowly missed his own school record in the 1000-yd. freestyle, covering the distance in 9:35.21, just 45 one-hundredths of a second behind his mark set at the 2004 Championships. Duggal used a time of 16:08.25 to take fifth in the 1650-yd. freestyle.
Jason Brozek finished tenth in the 200-yd. breaststroke (2:11.16) and 13th in the 100-yd. breaststroke (1:01.33) at the 2005 championships.
In 2004, Mary Beth Arnold's time of 2:22.80 in the 200-yd. breaststroke won the event at the Horizon League Championships. The time was a lifetime best for Arnold and broke Butler's school record in the event. Arnold took fifth in both the 100-yd. breaststroke (1:06.32) and 200-yd. breaststroke (2:24.61) in 2005.
Butler is the youngest team in the Horizon League with 11 swimmers taking part in their first championship meet.
Wright State captured the men's championship and UW-Green Bay took home women's honors last season.
