The Butler women's swimming team heads to Brown Deer, Wis., this week when it opens up the 2009 Horizon League Championship beginning on Wednesday (Feb. 25) and running through Saturday (Feb. 28).
The Bulldogs will open up competition at 8:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday before swimming prelims at 11:30 p.m. and finals at 7:30 p.m. on each of the final three days.
Butler has been idle from competition for nearly a month leading up to this week's league tournament, with the last meet coming on Feb. 8 against IUPUI and conference opponent Valparaiso.
Swimming in the final home meet of her collegiate career against the Jaguars and Crusaders, senior Sarah Lynne Gates made quite a splash with an impressive victory in the 200 IM, completing the trip in 2:16.18 and out-pacing her nearest competitor by 0.66 seconds. She also finished just 0.17 seconds out of a win in the 50 backstroke, recording a second-place time of 30.09, and posted a third-place showing in the 50 free with a time of 26.73.
Fellow senior Katie Krueger also put together a strong performance, swimming the 50 free in a time of 32.47 to place sixth and adding sixth-place time of 59.65 in the 100 free.
Gates has been the Bulldogs' top swimmer this season, holding the team's top times in eight individual events - including four freestyles and both backstroke and IM events - and was a member on all five of the squad's top relay teams.
Junior Stephanie Moles has been the team's top distance swimmer , while sophomore Leigh Weston and junior Momo Wilson continue to be Butler's top performers in the breaststroke, with the duo holding the top two times in both the 100 and 200.
