Marbeth Shiell Wins At Stan Lyons Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- A first place finish in the women’s 1500 meter run by senior Marbeth Shiell highlighted the performance of Butler’s track and field squad at the Stan Lyons Invitational held at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Saturday, April 30.  The meet was Butler’s final competition before the 2011 Horizon League Outdoor Championship.

Shiell narrowly edged teammate Katie Clark to post Butler’s lone win in the meet, which attracted competitors from nearly 30 schools.   Just 0:00.15 separated Shiell’s winning time of 4:26.17 from Clark’s second place finish.

Clark was one of four Bulldogs to post a runner-up finish in the meet.  Kirsty Legg finished second in the women’s 800 meter run in 2:08.69, trailing unattached runner Jackie Gordon by 0:00.13, while Shelbi Burnett came in second in the women’s 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:50.66.  Kris Gauson finished runner-up in the men’s 800 in 1:49.84.

Craig Jordan finished fourth in the men’s 800 in 1:50.59, while Alex Berry was sixth in the men’s 400 in 48.90.  Tom Brueggemann came in seventh in the men’s 100 in 11.13 and 10th in the men’s 200 in 22.32.

Butler will return to Michael A. Carroll Stadium to host the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship, which begins on Friday, May 6.
