Justin Roeder and Lauren McKillop each picked up individual wins to highlight the performance of Butler's track and field team on the first day of the 2011 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The three-day meet is being held at the Michael A. Carroll Stadium on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis.
Roeder pulled away midway through the men's 10,000 meter run and cruised to the individual title in 30:04.39. He finished more than 22 seconds ahead of defending champion Josh Stein of Loyola. Butler's Craig Gundersen came in third in 30:49.23, while Tom Boardman was sixth in 31:20.19. Butler's fourth runner in the event, Taylor Eaton, came in ninth in 32:15.82.
McKillop had an equally dominant performance in winning the women's 10,000 meter run. She grabbed the lead at the start and stretched it throughout the race. The Butler sophomore had a winning time of 35:48.67, 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Elise Sigg of Milwaukee. Butler's Rosie Edwards came in fifth in the race in 37:50.40, while Lauren Haberkorn was 11th in 38:47.62.
Butler's Brad Owens placed eighth in the men's discus with a throw of 146-08.
The meet will continue in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday, May 7, with running event prelims starting at 3 p.m.
