Gauson, Legg Advance To NCAA National Meet
BLOOMINGTON, IND. -- Kris Gauson and Kirsty Legg added to already impressive resumes and will represent Butler at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. The two middle distance standouts each qualified for the nationals with strong performances at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Saturday, May 28.
Gauson, the Most Outstanding Performer for Running Events at the 2011 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championship, earned his trip to famed Drake Stadium by posting the third-fastest time in the men's 1500 meter run. He placed third in the first heat of the semifinals in 3:46.82.
The Edinburgh, Scotland native advanced to Saturday's round by winning the third heat of the preliminaries on Thursday (May 26) with a time of 3:48.38.
Legg, a two-time Horizon League champ in both the 800 and 1500, also qualified for the nationals in the 1500. She placed fifth in the first heat of the semifinals at Indiana University with a time of 4:27.51. Legg had advanced to Saturday's competition with a fourth place finish in the third heat of the preliminaries in 4:22.86.
The two national qualifiers were among nine Butler athletes competing in the East Preliminary Round. On Saturday, Marbeth Shiell placed 14th (17:00.56) and Katie Clark came in 21st (17:18.38) in the first heat of the women's 5,000 meter run. Callum Hawkins finished 15th (14:39.25) in the first heat of the men's 5,000 meter run.
On the first day of the East Preliminary Round competition, Craig Jordan posted a fourth place finish in the fifth heat of the men's 800 meter run in 1:51.54. He missed advancing to the semifinals by 0:00.13. Justin Roeder placed 27th (30:07.84) and Tom Boardman 38th (30:46.01) in the men's 10,000 meter run, while Lauren McKillop came in 46th (36:16.59) in the women's 10,000.
The NCAA finals will be held at Drake University, June 8-11.
