Butler Lands Three In NCAA Preliminary Round
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Junior Kirsty Legg, sophomore Craig Jordan
and freshman Tom Curr (right) will represent Butler University at
the preliminary round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track
& Field Championships, being held in Jacksonville, Fla., May
24-26. The list of qualifiers for the national meet was
released by the NCAA on Thursday, May 17.
The three Butler athletes, who ranked among the top national performers in their respective events, will compete in NCAA’s East preliminary round at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus. The West preliminary round will be hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the same dates.
Legg and Curr each qualified in the 1500 meter run, while Jordan earned a spot in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Legg qualified for the third consecutive year, while Jordan is returning for the second straight year.
Curr, who was runner-up in the 1500 at the Horizon League Track and Field Championship, will be the first Butler athlete to race in Florida. The first-year runner, who had a qualifying time of 3:45.98, will compete in the first round of the men’s 1500 at 5:30 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, May 24. Legg, the Horizon League 1500 meter champion, will follow in the first round of the women’s 1500 at 6 p.m. She had a qualifying time of 4:21.32.
The quarterfinals of the men’s and women’s 1500 will be held on Saturday, May 25.
Jordan, who had a qualifying time of 8:58.84, will run in the quarterfinals of the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase at 8:50 p.m. (ET) on Friday, May 25.
Twelve competitors in each open and relay event at the East Preliminary Round will advance to the national semifinal and final rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Championship at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, June 6-9.
