Shelbi Burnett Named Academic All-District

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Sophomore Shelbi Burnett, who had a break-out season on Butler’s cross country squad and a successful campaign with the Bulldogs’ track and field team, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District V University Division Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team, chosen by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  The Butler distance standout was one of 16 student-athletes selected second team on the district honor squad.

Burnett, an honor student majoring in secondary education, emerged as the top performer on Butler’s league champion women’s cross country team last fall.  She won the individual title at the 2011 Horizon League Women’s Cross Country Championship, while leading Butler to a ninth team crown in ten years.  The two-time, first-team All-League cross country runner was named the 2011 Horizon League Female Cross Country Athlete of the Year.

The past spring, Burnett continued her successful distance career with a second consecutive runner-up finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2012 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship.  She also placed sixth in the women’s 1500 meter run at the league championship.

A total of 27 student-athletes were named first or second team on the academic honor squad from District V, which represents Division I schools from Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba.  Athletes named first team Academic All-District are eligible for the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Team.
