Butler track assistant coach Mason Cathey put on a strong performance at the USA National Outdoor Championships this past weekend in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The competition, held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, ran from June 23-26.
In Friday evening's (June 24) semi-finals, Cathey placed third in her heat with a time of 9:53.66. Her mark, which is now her lifetime best, automatically secured her a place in the finals, which were held on Sunday afternoon (June 26). She placed eighth with a time of 9:59.57. Her times were her third and fourth sub-10 minute efforts on the year.
The winner of the final was Colorado's Emma Coburn with a time of 9:44.11. Second place went to Bridget Franek of the Oregon Track Club, while third place was taken by Delila Decreezenso of Puma. The top three finishers will represent the United States at the World Track and Field Championships. The competition will be held from Aug. 27-Sept. 4 in Daegu, South Korea.
