Matt Roe Announces Women's Recruting Class

Butler head coach Matt Roe has assembled one of the largest women's track and field and cross country recruiting classes in school history, including a couple of the nation's top prep runners.  The successful Butler coach announced the following class of 15 student-athletes, who will be joining the Bulldogs in 2013-14:







Lauren Wood
Mason, Ohio
Mason High School

1600 meters:  4:57.00
3200 meters:  10:21.03 (U.S. #15)
5000 meters XC: 17:52.35

-15th ranked U.S. Prep (#7 Senior) at 3200 meters (10:21.03)
-2013 Ohio State3A Runner-up at 3200 meters (broke previous State Meet record)
-Led Mason to 2013 4x800 Ohio State 3A Relay title
-2013 Midwest Meet of Champions 3200 meter winner
-2012 Nike Cross Country Nationals Individual qualifier (65th overall)
-Led Mason to 2012 Ohio State 3A Cross Country title (4th place individual)
- Academic All Ohio 2012, 2013

Matt Roe on Wood:   "In the span of a year Lauren has come from relative obscurity to one of the fastest preps ever out of the state of Ohio.  She is one of the top prospects in the country and a real find for us. What first attracted us to Lauren was her potential, how others spoke of her character, and her academic credentials.  She will be a main cog in our program for years to come."

Matt Roe on Weatherford: "Colleen comes from a very talented family with deep Butler roots. She is one of the fastest middle distance prospects in the country. Beyond her obvious natural abilities, Colleen possesses a big time work ethic which will serve her well at this level.  From a coaching standpoint, what I admire most about Colleen is her ability to seek out and thrive in the most competitive moments."

Matt Roe on Good:   In just her third year of competitive running, Katie is an athlete on the upswing.  A pure distance runner, she has a lot of untapped potential in the longer races on the track and in Cross Country.  She will be a strong contributor for us this fall."

Matt Roe on Van Hoof:   "Alex ran in the smallest division in Illinois and was, at times, somewhat limited in her competitive experiences.  She has great physical tools and has shown flashes of a very high level of running.   A consistent, progressive training approach is going to serve her well.  In time, she is going to surprise a lot of people."

Matt Roe on Beckham:  "We have seen tremendous growth in our sprint program in the last few years. Bailey is only going to add or our group's record setting efforts.  Bailey is a versatile athlete who will be an important contributor in the long sprint events and on the relays."

Matt Roe on DeShaw:  Lauren is a newcomer to the sport after a long and successful swimming career.  She has shown good potential off of minimal training.  Lauren possesses great energy and desire to transition to collegiate running."
