Katie Clark Earns Conference Track Honor
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler's Katie Clark, coming off a record-setting performance at the Mt. Sac Relays, has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Performer of the Week. The Butler junior, who shared the league's weekly award with Kiara Porter of VCU, became Butler's first outdoor track athlete to be recognized by the A-10.
Clark shattered the Butler school record in the 5,000 meter run at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. She placed fourth among collegiate runners in the Invitational Elite race with a time of 15:43.51, topping the previous Butler mark (16:06.72) held by All-American Victoria Mitchell by more than 20 seconds. She unofficially became the first British woman to better the 2014 Commonwealth Games standard in the 5,000, and her performance currently ranks sixth in the NCAA this season.
Earlier this season, Clark broke Butler's 10,000 meters record by nearly two minutes! She also earned All-America honors as a cross country runner last fall.
Porter, a sprinter at VCU, grabbed a share of the league's weekly honor with a school-record performance in the 200 meter dash at the Vanderbilt Invitational. She finished in second place in the race with a time of 23.28. Porter also ran a personal-best time of 53.11 in the 400. Both of Porter's times rank first in the A-10.
The A-10 also honored Jake Deaton of Charlotte as the Men's Performer of the Week, Xavier Waller of VCU as the Men's Rookie of the Week and Dannah Hayward of Saint Joseph's as the Women's Rookie of the Week.
The Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be held in Charlotte, N.C., May 4-5.
