Seven Butler Athletes Head To NCAA Track Preliminary Round

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler junior Katie Clark qualified in two events and sophomore Tom Curr earned a repeat appearance at the 2013 NCAA Division I Track and Field East Prliminary Round, being held in Greensboro, N.C., Thursday-Saturday (May 23-25).  The two were among seven Butler athletes who qualified for the regional round.

Joining Clark and Curr for the competition at Irwin Belk Track Indside of Aggie Stadium will be juniors Ross Clarke and Tom Anderson, sophomores Mara Olson and Kodi Mullins and freshman Olivia Pratt.  The seven Butler athletes, who ranked among the top national performers in their respective events, will be trying to advance to the national championship in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.

Clark qualified in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs.  She enters the competition in North Carolina ranked third among East Preliminary Round qualifiers in the 5,000 and sixth in the 10,000.  The cross country All-American won the women's 5,000 meter run at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship earlier this month.

The women's 10,000 meter semifinals are scheduled for Thursday (May 23) at 9 p.m. (ET), while the women's 5,000 semifinals will be held on Saturday (May 25) at 8:05 p.m.

Curr earned a bid in the men's 1500 for the second consecutive year.  Runner-up in the men's 1500 at the A-10 Championship, he'll enter the East Preliminary Round ranked 10th in his event.  Clarke, ranked 13th, will join Curr in the men's 1500, which will begin on Thursday at 6 p.m.  Quarterfinals for the men's 1500 are scheduled for Saturday at 6:45 p.m.

Anderson will compete in the men's 10,000 at 9:40 p.m., on Thursday, while Mullins will be entered in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase, which is being held Friday (May 24) at 9:30 p.m.  Mullins, who captured the A-10 steeplechase title, is ranked tenth among East Preliminary Round competitors.

Olson and Pratt will join Clark in the women's 5,000 on Saturday.  Olson is ranked 15th in the event, while Pratt is one of just seven freshmen in the 48-runner 5,000 field.  Pratt was the women's 10,000 meter champ in the A-10 this season.

Twelve competitors in each open and relay event at the East Preliminary Round will advance to the national semifinal and final rounds of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship at Hayward Field.  The West Preliminary Round is being held this week in Austin, Texas.
