Distance Runners Lead Butler At Indiana Relays

Feb. 1, 2009

Butler swept three of the top four spots in the men's 5,000 meter race and posted a couple of top finishes in the men's mile invitational during a solid track and field weekend at the Indiana Relays, held in Bloomington on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 30-31). The Butler men's and women's track squads both competed in the non-scoring meet.

Sophomore Matt Lawder, senior Kent Wories and sophomore Madison Roeder turned in Butler's highlight performance of the weekend with three lifetime best efforts in the men's 5,000 meter race. Lawder led the way with a second place finish in 14:49.96, finishing just ahead of Wories, who came in third in 14:54.69. Roeder crossed the finish line in fourth place in 14:57.39. Zach Mayhew, competing unattached, won the race in 14:46.98.

"It was a nearly flawless execution of a race plan," said Butler head coach Matt Roe. "Matt, Kent and Madison have trained well together, and it is reflective in their race times."

Another Butler highlight came in the men's mile invitational race. Junior Rob Mullett placed seventh in the strong field in 4:07.29, topping the previous best Horizon League mark of 4:08.83 set by teammate Kris Gauson a week earlier. Junior Joe MacDonald, making his Butler indoor debut, finished ninth in the race in 4:09.35, the third-fastest time recorded in the Horizon League this season.

"Both Rob and Joe will be aiming for NCAA qualifying marks in the 3,000 meters next weekend at the Notre Dame Invitational," noted Roe. "Our training has them right on course for their goal.

The Bulldogs also picked up a "Top Five" finish from junior Tom Boardman, who ran a lifetime best 8:27.24 while placing fifth in the men's 3,000 meter race.
