Sarah Kemple Sets Butler 5,000 Meter Record

Freshman Sarah Kemple became the fastest 5,000 meter runner in school history with a record performance at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by the University of Notre Dame, to highlight a busy weekend for Butler's track and field squad. The Bulldogs, who also competed at the DePauw Tiger Invitational in Greencastle came home with two new school track and field marks.

Kemple raced to a fourth place finish in the 5,000 in 17:03.82 at Notre Dame. Her time broke the previous school indoor record of 17:31, set by Erin Kelly 1999. It also topped Butler's outdoor record of 17:08.46, set by Victoria Mitchell last year!

The Bulldogs also picked up a school record in the 1,000 meter run from sophomore Chris Smith, who finished sixth at the Meyo Invitational in 2:26.96. His effort topped the previous Butler indoor record of 2:28, set by Nathan Dosanjh in 2002.

Sophomore Maria Beitel recorded a sixth place finish in the women's 5,000 meter run at the Meyo Invitational with a time of 17:39.06. Junior Katie Stuckey had a personal record in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:02.4.

Other top performers for the Bulldogs at the Tiger Invitational were freshman Kristi Hertzler, who placed runner-up in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.71, freshman Katie Vanes, who was the fifth qualifier in the 55 meter hurdles in 9.12, freshman Johanna Marvin, who placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16-03.25, senior Chris King, who placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 45-09, and senior Brandon Waggoner, who came in third in the 400 meter run in 51.66.
