Butler Men, Women Place Third At Horizon League Indoor Championship

Junior Genni Gardner and senior Alex Hains each captured a pair of individual titles to highlight the performance of Butler's men's and women's track teams at the 2007 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championship, which wrapped up at the University of Michigan Indoor Track Building in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sunday, Feb. 25. The Butler women placed third of seven teams at the meet, while Butler's men finished third of six squads.
Gardner was named the meet's Outstanding Performer for Running Events after posting two individual wins, one runner-up finish and one relay title. She captured the women's 1,000 meter run in 3:00.40 and the women's mile run in 5:11.66, while finishing second in the women's 3,000 meter run in 10:24.66.
The talented Butler junior also joined with senior Kara Henry, junior Isabelle Stoate and freshman Jessica Langsdon to win the women's distance medley relay in 12:33.79.
Stoate finished second in both the 1,000 (3:01.63) and the mile (5:12.37), while Henry was third in the 3,000 (10:30.03). The Bulldogs also picked up third place finishes from junior Kristi Hertzler in the 60 meter hurdles (9.19) and sophomore Jennifer Macke in the high jump (5-01.25). Freshman Marbeth Shiell placed fourth in the women's 5,000 meter run (18:30.84) and fifth in the 3,000 (10:37.87).
Hains won the men's 3,000 meter run in 8:19.83, narrowly missing the league record of 8:19.28 set by Butler's Julius Mwangi in 1998, and the men's 5,000 meter run in 14:40.38. He placed just ahead of teammate Andrew Toward in both races. Toward, who won the mile run in 4:17.37, posted a time of 8:34.34 in the 3,000 and 14:49.53 in the 5,000.
Butler swept the first four places in the men's 3,000. Following Hains and Toward across the finish line were juniors Darren Gauson (8:37.90) and Sam Jacobs (8:39.83).
The Bulldogs also captured the men's distance medley relay in 10:07.93 behind the team of seniors Scott Overall and Chris Smith and freshmen Andy Barbeau and Shon Davidson. Smith also had a runner-up finish in the 1,000 meter run (2:33.87). Other top finishes for the Bulldogs were turned in by Gauson (runner-up in the mile, 4:18.89), freshman Aaron Cummins (third in the high jump, 6-05.5) and junior Matt Kral (fourth in the pole vault, 12-09.5).
UW-Milwaukee won both the men's and women's championships, while Youngstown State finished second in both competitions.
