Maria Beitel Sets Horizon League 5000 Meter Record

Sophomore Maria Beitel broke the league record in the 5,000 meter run to highlight the performance of the Butler men's and women's track squads at the 2005 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championship, which wrapped up at DePauw University on Sunday, Feb. 27. Butler placed fourth of six teams in the men's competition and fifth of seven squads in the women's championship.

Beitel was one of three Butler athletes to claim an individual title at the league meet. She ran off with the league title in the women's 5,000 meter run, posting a new league mark of 17:15.61 and finishing nearly 17 seconds ahead of runner-up Jenni Goebel of UIC.

Butler's women also set a league record in the distance medley relay. The team of Ava Hutchinson, Brooke Carr, Isabelle Stoate and Victoria Mitchell raced to a league mark of 11:49.13.

Butler's men picked up individual crowns from seniors Andrew Sherman and John Frazer. Sherman won the 1,000 meter run in 2:27.96, edging out teammate Thomas Frazer, who finished runner-up in 2:28.36. John Frazer won the 5,000 meter run in 14:30.27, finishing just over five seconds ahead of teammate Nick Goodliffe.

The Butler men also won the distance medley relay in 10:21.29.

Youngstown State won the women's team championship, while UW-Milwaukee claimed the men's crown. Marcus Lesley of UIC was named the men's Outstanding Performer for Running Events, while Nick Grentz of UW-Milwaukee was selected as the men's Outstanding Performer for Field Events. Jeanna Cunningham of Youngstown State was the women's Outstanding Performer for Running Events and Carly Youlton of Youngstown State was the women's Outstanding Performer for Field Events.
