Butler Men And Women Place Fifth In Horizon League Meet

Junior Becky Lyne won the women's 400 meter dash, junior Steve Vernon captured the 3,000 meter run and junior Gary Blackman won the 5,000 meter run to pace Butler's men's and women's track teams at the 2003 Horizon League Indoor Championship, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2. The Bulldogs placed fifth in both the men's and women's final team standings.
Lyne, running in her first Horizon League championship, finished first in the 400 in 56.92. She was running the 400 for the first time for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Jill Snyder had the second-best finish for the Bulldogs with a runner-up finish in the pole vault. Snyder cleared the bar at 10-06 to finish behind Lynda Thiel of UW-Milwaukee, who had a winning leap of 11-00.
Junior Mary Reeves placed fourth in both the 1,000 meter run (3:00.92) and the mile run (5:06.43).
Vernon led Butler's men with a first place finish in the 3,000 in 8:21.69. He also placed second in the mile run in 4:12.97. Blackman's winning time in the 5,000 meter run was 14:39.8.
Butler's men picked up runner-up finishes from freshman Brandon Cook in the 200 meter dash (22.68) and sophomore Chris King in the shot put (49-09). Senior Alex Hall placed third in the 60 meter dash (7.19) and senior Brad Bennett finished third in the 5,000 meter run (8:26.21).
Youngstown State won the men's team title, while UW-Milwaukee captured the women's team crown.
