Underclassman Lead Bulldogs in Outdoor Opener

March 28, 2006
On Saturday the Butler track team opened the 2006 outdoor season at the Jerry England Invite in downtown Indianapolis.
The small delegation of athletes was led by sophomore Sara Kemple's first place finish in the 3000 meter run in a time of 10:43.
The second highest Bulldog placement of the day went to freshman Amanda Zolman, who high jumped 5-00 to earn third place in her outdoor debut.
Butler women scored a couple of athletes in the 100 meter hurdles. Freshman Jen Macke finished sixth in 16.49, and sophomore Kristi Hertzler came in eighth in 17.76.
All this was enough for the women to beat out Vincennes University to place seventh out of the eight teams.
On the male side, the Bulldogs were boosted by a pair of freshman double scorers. Terra Haute native Sean Woolen placed fourth in the 200 (24.55) and claimed sixth in the 400 (54.20). Josh Winbaugh finished sixth in both the 100 (12.11) and 200 (24.89.)
The rest of the Bulldog's points were scored by the 4x100 relay (fourth, 44.85), and sophomores Nate Schaefer in the 100 hurdles, (seventh, 106.42), and Mike Morgan in the 200 (eighth, 26.6).
Their combined efforts earned them sixth place as a team, defeating IUPUI, Danville, Air Force, and DePauw.
Next weekend, the Bulldogs will have teams traveling to both the DePauw Quad in Greencastle, and out west at the elite Stanford Invitational to open their seasons and seek out national qualifying standards.
