Runners Hit Regional Qualifications in Opening Races
April 4, 2006
After sitting out last week, junior Scott Overall and sophomore Jenny Pereira opened their seasons by qualifying for the regional meet in the 5000m at the elite Stanford Invite.
Overall, whose last race was almost a month ago at the NCAA indoor championships, set a personal best in the event at 14:00. In a race that included professional athletes, 17 runners ran under the standard of 14:10.
Pereira not only qualified with her time of 16:36, but in doing so became the second fastest Bulldog ever over the distance.
Also experiencing success at 5000m in Palo Alto were sophomore Genni Gardner and senior Katie Stuckey. The pair ran personal bests of 17:09 and 17:15 respectively to open their outdoor seasons.
Another contingent of athletes was sent to Greencastle for the DePauw Quad meet. Unlike the distance runners at Stanford, it was the hurdlers that led the way at this meet.
Freshman Tyler Kos pulled of an impressive triple by winning the 400m hurdles (1:01.58), taking second in the triple jump (11.73m) and third in the 110m hurdles (15:53).
Sophomore Nate Schaefer picked up where Kos left off, finishing second and fourth in the 400m hurdles (1:02.77), and 110m hurdles (16.80).
Also leaping his way to success was freshman Erik Feldmann, who placed third in the long jump with a 5.51m effort.
Multi-event athletes also got it done on the woman's side. Freshman Jennnifer Macke tallied up points with a second place finish in the high jump (1.52m), third in the 100m hurdles (16.66), and sixth in the long jump (4.51m).
Consistent sophomore Kristi Hertzler, who held the meet record for the 100m hurdles at the beginning of the day, finished second in both that race (15.73), and the 400m hurdles (1:08.93).
Another `top-3' finish went to freshman Amanda Zolman, who cleared 1.47 meters to beat all but two in the high jump.
This week, the men and women will continue in their hunt for qualifying standards and personal bests at Miami-Ohio.
