Butler freshman Brandon Cook took time off from football practice to spend an afternoon competing in track and field, and he wound up as one of the top performers at the Miami University Invitational held in Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday, April 12. The first-year sprinter helped Butler's men to a seventh place finish in the nine-team field. Butler's women also placed seventh at the meet.
Cook, a defensive back on Butler's football team, surprised a talented field in the 100 meter dash by winning the event in 10.85. Then he won the 200 meter dash in 21.73! The two first place finishes were Butler's only individual wins at the meet, and Cook was the only individual in the competition to capture two events. The Butler speedster also helped the Bulldogs' 4 X 100 relay team to a runner-up finish.
Butler also picked up points from Brian Dunn, who placed fourth in the 5,000 meter run in 15:10.21.
Senior Bethany Gaskill placed fifth in the 1500 meter run in 4:44.87, one spot ahead of teammate Monika Schneider, who posted a time of 4:45.85. Butler also had sixth place finishes from Mary Reeves in the 800 meter run (2:16.90) and Kaylee Quilling in the high jump (5-3).
