Senior Genni Gardner won the women's 1,500 meter race to highlight the performance of the Butler track and field squad at the Miami Team Challenge, held at the George L. Rider Track in Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday, April 12. Butler's women finished 7th of 14 teams, while Butler's men placed 8th of 11 squads in the meet.
Gardner captured the women's 1500 meter title in 4:34.53, finishing one second ahead of runner-up Amanda Mirochna of host Miami. Butler junior Rachel Gibbs came in third in the race in 4:40.44.
The Bulldogs also picked up a third place finish in the women's 800 meter run from senior Claire Holme. The top five runners in the race all finished less than a second apart, with Carly Bates of Bowling Green winning the competition in 2:17.12. Mirochna finished second in 2:17.26, narrowly edging Holme who crossed the line in 2:17.30. Christine Sprehe of Buffalo was fourth in 2:17.40 and Heather Conger of Bowling Green was fifth in 2:17.42.
In the men's competition, senior Darren Gauson paced the Bulldogs with a fourth place finish in the 5,000 meter run. He finished in 15:08.15. Freshman Madison Roeder came in sixth in the same race in 15:23.67, edging sophomore teammate Taylor Eaton, who was seventh in 15:25.53.
Sophomore Andy Barbeau notched a sixth place finish in the 800 meter run in 2:00.19, while junior Tyler Kos came in ninth in the 400 hurdles in 59.09.
