Tucker Sets Miami Invitational 1500 Meter Record

Junior Mark Tucker captured the Bulldogs' lone individual title and set a meet record to highlight Butler's performance at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational track and field meet held in Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday (April 13). Butler's men placed 8th in the meet, while Butler's women came in 11th.

Tucker, a distance runner from Geelong, Australia, placed first in the 1500 meter run in 3:45.80, setting a new Miami Invitational record. He finished four seconds ahead of Kyle Orender of Purdue, while recording the second-best 1500 meter time by a Butler runner this year. It was the first time this spring that Tucker's competed in the 1500.

Butler also picked up points in the 1500 from juniors Phil Yoder and Marty Fedmowski. Yoder finished seventh in 3:55.83, while Fedmowski came in eighth in 3:56.53.

Senior Richard Vint had Butler's second-best finish at Miami with a fourth place finish in the 800 meter run. Vint covered the distance in a season-best 1:53.18.

In the field events, the Bulldogs picked up points from seniors Matt Blake and Ryan Falquist, junior Eric Michielutti, and freshmen Tommy Mathews, Kofi Anokwa and Chris King. Blake placed fifth in the hammer throw (163-8), Flaquist was fifth in the triple jump (37-9.5), Michielutti came in fifth in the shot put (46-9), Mathews placed seventh in the high jump (6-2), Anokwa was fifth in the long jump (19-5.5) and King placed eighth in the shot put (45-4.5). Freshman Corey Norman had a career-best leap of 13-6 in the pole vault, while placing ninth.

Butler also picked up points in the 4 X 100 relay with a third place finish (43.91).

The top finishes for Butler's women were turned in by sophomore Maria Jusseaume, who placed ninth in the 800 meter run (2:17.02), and freshman Kaylee Quilling, who was ninth in the high jump (5-2). Freshman Jill Snyder came in tenth in the pole vault (10-6).

Butler head coach Joe Franklin also sent several athletes to the Tennessee Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. Senior Nathan Dosanjh turned in the best time by a Butler runner this spring in the 800 meter run with a 1:52.81 at Tennessee' Tom Black Track. Sophomore Trent Elliott posted a time of 54.51 in the 400 meter hurdles.
