Junior Genni Gardner ran the second-fastest 5,000 meter race in Butler history while turning in a stellar performance at the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 26. She was one of five Butler athletes competing at the nationally-prominent track and field meet.

Gardner crossed the finish line in 16:26.82, topping the NCAA Division I qualifying mark for the race. She trailed Lindsay Donaldson of Yale in second place by nine seconds and winner Aine Hoban of Providence by 19 seconds. Her time was second only to Victoria Mitchell (16:06 in 2005) on Butler's all-time 5,000 meter list.

Butler also had a strong performance by senior Kara Henry in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase. She placed fifth in that event with a time of 10:58.31. Freshman Marbeth Shiell came in 19th in the 5,000 meter run in 17:19.86.

Competing on the men's side, freshman Justin Roeder and junior Sam Jacobs placed 15th and 16, respectively, in the 5,000 meter run. Roeder crossed the finish line in 14:41.68, narrowly edging Jacobs, who finished in 14:41.74.
