Bulldogs Set Two School Records At Drake Relays Distance medley and 4 X 1600 marks fall
Butler head coach Joe Franklin only entered two relay teams in the men's competition at the Drake Relays, April 26-27, and both responded with record-setting performances. Despite rainy and cold conditions at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, the Bulldogs established Butler records in both the 4 X 1600 relay and the distance medley relay.
The first school mark to fall was the 4 X 1600 relay record of 16:54.31, set by Nate Smurdon, Scott Lidskin, Rob Krar and Joe Baltes in 1997. The Butler quartet of seniors Richard Vint and Nathan Dosanjh and juniors Phil Yoder and Mark Tucker shaved five seconds off the record while placing sixth in the event in 16:49.43.
Vint, Dosanjh and Tucker then came back with sophomore Trent Elliott to smash the distance medley record, while placing third in a strong field in 9:48.60. Butler was just .26 behind runner-up Iowa State and 1.28 seconds away from champ Northern Iowa. The previous Butler distance medley record of 9:58.48 was set by Smurdon, Seth Cockrum, Jeff Barnd and All-American Julius Mwangi in 1998.
The Bulldogs just missed a school record in the 4 X 800 relay in the women's competition. The Butler team of sophomores Rholonda Ash and Maria Jusseaume, senior Andrea Stehman and junior Kelly Moring finished in 9:12.45. The Butler record is 9:09.56, set by Shelley Lorek, Abi Ramer, Emily Glatfelter and Megan Taylor in 1997.
Butler's lone individual competitor at the Drake Relays was junior Marty Fedmowski, who posted a time of 14:47.23 in the 5,000 meter run.
