May. 2, 2005
Senior Victoria Mitchell and junior Ava Hutchinson turned in school-record performances to highlight Butler's participation in the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Stanford University on Sunday, May 1. The west coast competition concluded a busy weekend that saw the Bulldogs also visit the Penn Relays and host the Stan Lyons Invitational.
Mitchell broke her own school record in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:06.72 at Stanford. She placed eighth in the race, while breaking the Butler record of 16:28.59 that she set on the same track earlier this season.
Hutchinson placed first in the "B" section of the 1500 meter run in 4:23.77. That topped the school mark of 4:24.60 that she set earlier this year at the Mt. Sac Relays in California. Freshman Isabelle Stoate placed third in the "A" section of the 1500 meter run in 4:31.81.
Other top performances at Stanford were turned in by junior Scott Overall, who placed fourth in the "B" section of the 5,000 meter run in 14:03.10, senior Nick Goodliffe, who came in 26th in the "A" section of the 5,000 meter run in 14:08.80, and senior John Frazer, who placed fourth in the "B" section of the 10,000 meter run in 29:03.67. Overall and Goodliffe both topped the regional qualifying standard, while Frazer became a provisional qualifier.
The Bulldogs began the weekend at the Penn Relays, where three Butler runners competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Kara Henry posted a time of 11:04.48, senior Monika Schneider finished in 11:07.07 and freshman Genni Gardner came in with a time of 11:16.47.
Back in Indianapolis, senior Thomas Frazer won the men's 1500 meter run at the Stan Lyons Invitational with a time of 3:54.64. Junior Brooke Carr placed second in the women's 800 meter run in 2:17.42, while freshman Kristi Hertzler was third in the women's 400 meter dash in 1:01.11. Senior Jill Snyder placed third in the women's pole vault (10-11.75).
