Miler Hains Qualifies for MidEast Regional
May 8, 2006
First year Bulldog Alex Hains hopped on 37 South down to Bloomington Friday night to take part in the hottest 1500m race run in the Midwest this year. Hains rounded out a group of 8 runners that posted times below the standard. His 3:47.48 (which roughly translates to a 4:04 mile) was just .22 seconds under the Regional mark. Sean Jefferson of Indiana won in 3:41, his time was one of the fastest in the NCAA this year.
Senior Katie Stuckey continued her stand-out season with a first-place 10:40 in the 3000m steeplechase. The mark leads the Horizon League by 37 seconds, and is well within the regional qualifying standard.
Communications major Ava Hutchinson was also at IU in search of the standard. Despite her 1st place finish, she came up about 2 seconds off the mark with a 4:29. The senior, who set the school record in the event last year, took another crack at qualifying in Indianapolis at the Butler Twilight meet. This time she not only won, but set a meet record, however she again posted a 4:29. She has until mid-May to hit the standard, or could advance by winning the race at the Horizon League meet, in which she is currently favored.
Other highlights on the women's side at the Butler event included Jenny Pereira's 9:53 domination of the 3000m field, and Kristi Hertzler's 3rd place finish in the 400m with a 1:00.27.
Consistent Lade Akande secured two 4th place finishes in the field. The freshman threw 39.96m in the discuss, and put the shot 12.10m.
Andrew Toward posted the men's highest finish of the day with a 4:00 4th place in the 1500m. He also competed the night before in Bloomington where he fared a little better with a 3:55.
This Thursday and Friday the Bulldogs will be hosting the Horizon League Championship meet downtown at the IUPUI elite track facility. Four athletes will be heading into the meet as favorites in their events.
