Freshman Matt Lawder placed runner-up in the 10,000 meter run and helped Butler to a fifth place team standing in the men's competition after the first day of the 2008 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Youngstown, Ohio, on Thursday (May 8). Butler's women finished the opening day in a tie for fifth place.
Lawder crossed the finish line in the men's 10,000 meter run in 32:01.95, coming in six seconds behind individual champ Sam Romanoski of Loyola. The Bulldogs also picked up a third place finish in the men's 10,000 from freshman Madison Roeder, who posted a time of 32:11.37.
Sophomore Brett Millard notched a fourth place finish in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase, the other men's running final contested on Thursday. Millard finished the race in 9:52.31.
In the women's competition, Butler picked up third place finishes from senior Sarah Kemple in the 10,000 meter run and senior Calli Grimes in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Kemple finished her race in 37:28.36, while Grimes came across the finish line in 11:45.06. Sophomore Whitney Turner placed fifth in the steeplechase in 12:15.10.
Butler had six additional athletes advance to the finals in preliminary events held on Thursday. Junior Tyler Kos (400 hurdles), sophomore Shon Davidson (100) and freshman Brent Sever (110 hurdles) each advanced in the men's competition, while seniors Isabelle Stoate (800), Claire Holme (800) and Kristi Hertzler (400 hurdles) each moved on in the women's events.
The Horizon League Championship will conclude with all remaining final events on Friday (May 9).
