Paced by senior Richard Vint, Butler's men grabbed sole possession of second place, while Butler's women moved into a tie for second after the first day of the Horizon League Track and Field Championship being held at the Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis. Reigning champ UW-Milwaukee holds the lead in both the men's and women's competitions.

Vint gave Butler an early lead in the meet with a record-setting performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Leading almost from the start, the Butler senior covered the distance in 9:03.40 to break the previous league record of 9:05.10, set by Dan Hoarty of Loyola in 1999. Butler also picked up a third place finish in the event from junior Mark Tucker, who posted a time of 9:19.84.

The Bulldogs also had a strong showing in the 10,000 meter run, with senior Justin Young and junior Marty Fedmowski placing second and third, respectively, behind the record-setting performance of Loyola's Donnie Franzen, who posted a blistering time of 29:48.71. Young, the defending 10,000 meter champ and previous conference record-holder, beat his own previous league record of 31:49.12 by more than a minute with a 30:20.94, while Fedmowski came in with a time of 31:08.57. Junior Brad Bennett came in fifth in 31:25.55, as the top seven runners in the race all bettered the previous league mark.

Butler also picked up points from freshman Corey Norman, who tied for second in the pole vault (13-01.50), senior Matt Blake, who was third in the hammer throw (160-05), and freshman Rob Hartman, who placed fifth in the javelin (133-00).

UW-Milwaukee holds a seven-point lead over the Bulldog, heading into the final day of competition.

Butler's women picked up a strong performance from Lissa Vogley in the 10,000 meter run. The Butler junior finished second with a time of 36:26.43. Her time was 23 seconds faster than the previous league record, which was shattered by UIC's Jenni Goebel (35:57.18).

The Bulldogs also picked up a third place finish from freshman Monika Schneider in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:34.09.) and from freshman Jill Snyder in the pole vault (10-0). Sophomore Danielle Ooten placed sixth in the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:59.82.

Heading into the final day of competition, Butler's women have 21 points and are tied for the runner-up spot with Detroit. UW-Milwaukee leads the field with 68 points.
