Butler Men Place Second, Women Sixth At Horizon League Track Championship

Host Butler made a strong run at the men's team title, but wound up placing second at the Horizon League Track and Field Championship held at Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis on Thursday and Friday, May 9-10. Butler's women slipped on the final day of competition and placed sixth in the league competition.

Sophomore Trent Elliott took center stage on the final day of the conference meet and was named the Outstanding Performer for Running Events. Elliott won the 110 meter high hurdles in 14.89 and the 400 meter hurdles in 54.88. He also ran on Butler's winning 4 X 100 relay team (43.01), and he placed third in the 400 meter dash (49.60)!

Butler's men posted one other individual title on the final day when senior Justin Young broke his own league record while winning the 5,000 meter race in 14:36.20. Young, who was runner-up in the 10,000 meter run on Thursday night, shaved four seconds off his previous league 5,000 mark.

Senior Richard Vint, who set a conference record of 9:03.40 while winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase on Thursday, came back on Friday to place second in the 800 meter run in 1:55.77. He also placed third in the 1,500 in 3:52.22, finishing just 0.02 seconds behind teammate Mark Tucker in the runner-up spot.

Also posting runner-up finishes for the Bulldogs were junior Alex Hall in the 100 (11.08) and sophomore Brandon Baker in the 400 hurdles (55.73). Hall, the defending conference champ in the 100, was edged out in his bid for another title by Eugene Harris of Youngstown State. Harris, who also won the 200, was named Outstanding Newcomer for Running Events.

Butler was poised to challenge defending champ UW-Milwaukee for the title heading into the 5,000 meter run, but the Panthers responded with a runner-up finish in the 5,000 and a title in the 4 X 400 relay. UW-Milwaukee finished with 179 points and won its third straight league title, while Butler wound up with 162 points.

The Panthers also captured the women's title by the biggest margin in league history. UW-Milwaukee posted 188 points to finish 38 points ahead of runner-up Detroit. Butler finished sixth with 34.50 points.

Junior Lissa Vogley had the top individual finish for Butler's women with her runner-up performance in the 10,000 meter run on Thursday. Vogley also shared the top Butler performance on the final day of competition with a fourth place finish in the 5,000 meter run (17:46.59). Sophomore Rholonda Ash placed fourth in the 400 meter run (58.27).
