Becky Lyne Qualifies For NCAA National Meet

Junior Becky Lyne will finish her amazing first season at Butler with a trip to California. The Butler middle distance ace earned a berth in the NCAA National Championship by winning the 800 meter run at the NCAA Mideast Regional at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, May 31. She was the lone Butler competitor to qualify for the national meet.

Lyne, who was the 800 meter champ at the Horizon League Outdoor Championship, broke her own school 800 meter record and set a Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium mark while winning her preliminary heat in a time of 2:02.66 on Friday. She then completed her bid by winning the finals in a time of 2:02.89. Lyne, a native of Sheffield, England, was one of 11 runners in the 800 meter field who broke the previous Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record!

The next stop for Butler's talented runner will be California State University at Sacramento. The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be held in Sacramento, June 11-17.

Lyne was one of 11 Butler track and field athletes competing at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Junior Gary Blackman placed 13th in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:15.95, while senior Brad Bennett was 27th in the 5,000 meter run in 15:38.92.

In the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, senior Bethany Gaskill placed eighth in the first heat in 11:12.20. Senior Lois Bowles was 17th in the second heat in 11:13.02, while sophomore Monika Schneider was 18th in 11:22.77.

Senior Lissa Vogley came in 24th in the women's 5,000 meter run in 18:03.46.

Butler's 4 X 100 relay team was disqualified in the preliminary heat of the men's relay competition.
