Sophomore Marbeth Shiell won the women's 3,000 meter run and freshman Brent Sever tied a school record to highlight the performance of the Butler men's and women's track teams at the EIU Early Bird Meet in Charleston, Ill., on Saturday, Dec. 8. The meet, hosted by Eastern Illinois University, was Butler's first competition of the 2007-08 indoor track and field season.
Shiell led Butler to a one-two finish in the 3,000 meter run, posting a winning time of 10:21.91. She came in just ahead of teammate Rachel Gibbs, who placed runner-up in 10:22.78. Senior Sarah Kemple finished fourth in the race in 10:53.24.
The Bulldogs also picked up a pair of runner-up finishes from senior Isabelle Stoate. She placed second in the 1,000 meter run in 3:04.13 and finished runner-up in the mile run in 5:14.99. Whitney Turner came in third in the 1,000 in 3:22.07, while Calli Grimes finished fifth in the mile in 5:40.
Other top running finishes for the Bulldogs were turned in by Kristi Hertzler, who placed fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.37), Amanda Zolman, who finished fourth in the high jump (4-09.75), Johanna Marvin, who was fifth in the triple jump (31-00.50), and Ashley Dick, who wound up sixth in the 800 meter run (2:34.72).
Sever tied the Butler 60 meter hurdle record with a time of 8.64, while finishing ninth in the event. Tommy Davies had the best finish among Butler's men, placing fourth in the men's 3,000 meter run in 8:54.31. Matt Lawder finished fifth in the mile in 4:30.70. Sophomore Shon Davidson placed 10th in the 60 meter dash in a lifetime best 7.28.
The season-opening meet included Indiana State, Western Illinois, Eastern Illinois and Vincennes.
